California Council on Economic Education (CCEE) has received a $17,500 grant from State Farm to prepare students in Los Angeles with information about making important financial decisions. CCEE believes that economic and personal finance education is key to making economic mobility and security possible for all Californians. The nonprofit, based in Torrance, works with California teachers to create financially literate students who thrive in the global economy. By teaching economics and financial literacy, especially in under-served communities, CEE helps empower students with information and knowledge that will help them succeed.
Part of the training students receive includes hearing from local businesses during Family Financial Literacy Events held by LAUSD and CCEE. Local insurance agents, who are small business owners and independent contractors, were the latest group to share their business insights. State Farm agents from West L.A., Tatiana Ruiz More, Mel Palomo, and Ryan Edwards all spoke to students and their parents. They shared basics of homeowners, renters, auto, and health insurance and explained how individuals can protect their hard-earned assets, avoiding possible financial disasters. Agents Ruiz More and Palomo also presented in Spanish.
“This isn’t a subject widely taught in grade school, middle school, or high school. Early education will help people make better decisions,’ said State Farm agent Ryan Edwards. “It also prevents people from being taken advantage of because they will have a better understanding of their options and choices.”
Approximately 2,200 families within California have been able to access crucial personal finance education at the Family Financial Literacy Events. More students and their families will have the chance to attend on April 23rd and May 12th. Interested families can register to attend at no-cost at https://ccee.org/community-programs.
